31 May 2006Xin Wang Hong Kong Cafe at Marina Square. Aly and I were looking for a place to have dinner when we saw a signboard outside HomeFix with some pics and the words “Hong Kong Cafe”. That was more than enough for us to hunt the place down and sample the food.
Good thing that the billboard had a map as well, so I knew where the place was. It’s where the old Aiwa service center was (anybody remember that?) or to be more accurate, where Han’s used to be I guess ![]()
The waiter showed us to our seats which were really comfy. We got the soft plush chairs somewhat in the middle and not the seats at the side (which had no cushioning).
There were 4 menus placed on the table, the waiter just took away 2 of them and left us to decide what we wanted to order.
Impressive looking menu….
Big pics of stuff you will find in HK like the buildings, the cars, etc.
Big, nice and yummy pics of the food…
Everything on the menu was clear and nicely laid out
The seats at the side which I mentioned earlier … without cushioning! ![]()
Hey! Terracotta warrior! I thought this was a “Hong Kong Cafe” … not “China Cafe”!!! ![]()
Cutlery… condiments… spare plates… quite cheapo looking as compared to the rest of the decor in the place… but it works for me
Too bad no cut red chilli though ![]()
Printed serviettes…
Aly’s order of “Fresh Lemon Tea” … tasted pretty good I say! Aly said she preferred it to the one at HK Cafe at East Coast ![]()
At a Hong Kong Cafe? Gotta try the Ice Ying Yang of ‘cos!!! Came in this metal mug which reminded me so much of my NS days :s
The drink tasted pretty good as well, coffee and tea tastes were nicely blended unlike the one at Causeway Bay Cafe where the coffee taste and smell overpowered the tea … One thing though…. upon getting to the end of the drink, I was chewing on some sugar bits which didn’t melt… but it was a good drink overall ![]()
Borsch Soup, tasted similar to the one at HK Cafe to Aly. I preferred the one here as I felt that it had a slightly lighter taste compared to the one at HK Cafe.
Aly ordered some dim sum as she wasn’t that hungry… Steamed Pork Spare ribs! It had an interesting taste which I can’t describe and haven’t tasted before, but I liked it! Plus it wasn’t oily and starchy like some other places.
More dim sum for Aly… Special Shrimp Har Gow … I liked it too as it didn’t have that starchy texture/taste.
Stir fried Seasonal vegetables with oyster sauce. We could choose from various types of vegetables like xiao bai cai, lettuce, kai lan, etc. Aly chose kai lan.
The taste was pretty good… I wanted to slurp all the sauce down. The kai lan itself was disappointing though… pretty old stems… tough and all…
My order of Black Pepper Chicken Spaghetti.
The black pepper chicken tasted pretty good. The spaghetti was disappointing though. Too dry! It was pretty well mixed up though, but it was just too dry, I prefer my spaghetti WET with lots of sauce to spare ![]()
Total bill came up to $35.25 after tax and service charge. Could’ve been cheaper I guess, or rather, I would’ve preferred it to be cheaper, but I guess I can’t really complain as most places have these type of prices nowadays. The prices for the stuff were comparable to HK Cafe at East Coast.
Some plus points….
It’s closer to home than HK Cafe and with a proper and bigger parking lot (Marina Square as compared to the “hope I can find somewhere to park” situation at HK Cafe East Coast – Not sure about their new branch at Thomson though).
Place closes at 2am … not a bad place to have late nite suppers or just drinks to chill out with friends, could be later I suppose…
The place was also pretty cold… Aly and I were both freezing by the time we finished up. This is one place I’m definitely going back to sample the other stuff on their menu! ![]()
